A4EA Insights: Country briefing on Mozambique
Abstract
The Action for Empowerment and Accountability Research Programme (A4EA) examines different forms of social and political action to understand how and under what conditions they contribute to real world change, including gains in empowerment for the most excluded and marginalised, and for increased accountability of authorities. A4EA work is highly relevant to FCDO’s expressed goals of developing research-led solutions to building open societies and supporting conflict resolution, including through a focus on strengthening democratic institutions, human rights and effective, accountable governance. In Mozambique, A4EA projects include long-term work to understand poor and marginalised people’s experiences of different authorities, in-depth research on the dynamics of protest and claims for accountability and better services in a range of key sectors including energy and transport, exploration of women’s leadership and representation, and analysis of donor governance programmes. Working with a range of Mozambican research partners including the Instituto de Estudos Sociais e Económicos (IESE), Kaleidoscopio, Fórum Mulher and the Centro de Integridade Pública (CIP) we have completed six A4EA projects that included research in Mozambique, and have five studies currently ongoing.
